Thoughts
The new year is only a few hours away now, so I
figured I might as well get an early jump start on
one of my New Years Resolutions...
New Years Resolutions...I've never really been a fan
of them. I mean after all, who REALLY keeps their
resolutions much beyond the month of February, right?
I use to never make New Years Resolutions, but for
some reason this year, I find myself oddly motivated
to. And since one of my resolutions is to blog more I
figured I might as well share a few of my resolutions
with you in hopes of inspiring you as well.
1) Become More Physically Active - I must admit going
to law school has been one of the must detrimental
things I've ever done for my health. Three years of
being chronically sleep deprived, over caffeinated,
and pressed for time doesn't lead to a very healthy
lifestyle. Before law school I use to run 3-5 miles,
3-5 times a week. Whether it's running, spinning, or
just going out for a walk, one of my resolutions is
to become more physically active this year. Far too
often I come home from work, tired and unmotivated
and waste hours away each evening in front of the
television or computer. It's time to get up off the
couch and get out more.
2) Save Money For the Future - Being a young
professional just out of college, I find myself in
the odd situation of actually earning a steady
paycheck and, assuming I follow my budget, having a
little extra cash left over each month after the
bills are paid. It's been a few months now, and I'm
not exactly sure where that extra money has gone.
Granted there was Christmas gifts to buy and a few
unexpected household expenses. But there's also a lot
of extra stuff I don't really need hanging around. So
one of my New Years resolutions is to live on a
realistic budget, and make sure I put money aside
every month for savings rather than just blowing odd
things here are there. I've found that I need to find
something to do with my extra income, or it will find
something to do all on its own. Especially having the
advantage of being young and having many more years
in the workforce, the math of compounding interest is
astounding. For all you young people out there, and I
know we have many young fans of the show, run the
numbers, saving a little every month and invested
wisely over the long run yields significant results.
I'm going to make a point to educate myself this year
on investment options, saving money wisely and
planning for the future. (Now, don't think less of me
when I buy a new Ultra Portable MacBook after
Macworld...I've been budgeting for that!)
3) Pay Down Debt - Going along with resolution #2, on
of my goals this year is to make a dent in my debt.
Thankfully I have avoided credit card debt and only
have student loans looming over me, but I hate owing
anyone money. So that hefty student loan debt that is
amortized over the next 25 years, I'd like to plan to
pay off in the next 5. I've been listening to
financial guru
Dave Ramsey through his daily
podcasts and this guy really makes a lot of
sense in a world that's gone crazy with
consumerism. I've seen too many friends get into
trouble by living beyond their means and making
large impulse buys so one of my longer-term
resolutions is to get out of and stay out of
debt.
4) Grow the MacCore Podcast - Okay, this is where you
guys come in. The podcast has been a very rewarding
part of my life these past few few years and is going
to be two years old in January. For now, and the
foreseeable future, the podcast will remain a hobby
and side project, but my goal for 2008 is to make it
a more serious one. This year I resolve to blog more
on the site on a variety of topics to supplement the
show, be more diligent about producing shows on a
regular schedule and strive for every show to be of
the highest quality, and hopefully along the way
we'll grow in our listenership and the podcast will
become self sustaining. If you have any general
suggestions or comments on how to improve the podcast
over this next year, I'd really like to hear from
you. drop me an email,
themaccore@gmail.com and let me
know what you'd like to see from the MacCore in
2008 and how we can find our niche in the Mac
podcasting community.
So, those are my four big resolutions this year.
Crazy? Overly optimistic? Maybe. But hey, setting
goals is at least a start. What are your resolutions
this year?
